*****My Glacier Project 1999***** By: DeeAnna***** Age 9***** Grade 3***** Mrs.Feldman's Class
The Purpose Of My Experiment: To find out how glaciers move My hypothesis:
Was that all the glaciers would melt and move at the same speed.

The Procedure:
The first thing that I did was to read as much information as I could find about glaciers, including how they form, how they move, where they are located, and how they effect our world.
It had snowed, so I was able to go outside and get snow to use for my experiment. I also had a dish of water that we froze to use in the experiment.
I put all the pans on an angle of about 30 degrees.
I took three different pans and used different textures of soil.
Pan #1: Was a little smaller, and I used a smooth soil. (potting soil)
Pan #2: A little larger pan, I used soil that was more course with little bits of rock and gravel.
Pan #3:Was the largest pan with a soil mixture of both of the above types.
In pans #1 and #2 I used the glaciers that I had made from compacted snow.
In pan #3 I used the Ice glacier from our freezer, it had broken in two pieces one large and one small.

Results:
As I watched the glaciers, the ones made from snow began to melt very slowly. They had meltwater under them but, didn't move very much.
The two made from ice surged almost instantaneously.
Conclusion:
The heavier the glacier the faster it moved from the force of gravity.Even though the size of the one was smaller, it was heavier than the compacted snow ones.
Some things that I learned about glaciers:
1. How they are formed. When snow falls and does not have time to melt before the next snow season, and more snow falls on top, year after year, it squeezes the air out and a glacier forms.
2. That there two ways that they move. Either very slowly or surge very fast.
3. The water underneath is called meltwater.
4. There are over 100,000 glaciers in Alaska.
5. Icebergs are pieces that have broken off glaciers that have reached the sea This is called calving.
6. That there can be glaciers in the Amazon Basin (Antisana)
7. 10% of the Earth is covered in glaciers.
8. A lot of glaciers have not been named.
9. Glaciers come in many sizes.
10. 75% of the Earth's fresh water is contained in glaciers.
11. The Great Lakes were formed by glaciers.
12. That some glaciers contain life. (the ice worm.)

Some of the people who helped me were:
1. My Mom (helped me set up experiments and helped with this page.)
2. My Dad (helped take pictures for my display)
3. My Brother Ricky (helped gather snow & made ice glacier)
4. Mrs. Feldman (hepled me find my experiment and offered suggestions)
5. Mr. Blake (ran copies of experiments)
6. Mrs. Bush ( let me use her Alaska video and pictures of calving for my display)
7. Mrs. Whitsitt (suggestion of taking pictures of experiments in progress).

Some of the sources of information that I used were :
1. Our computer
2. The Internet ( The links below were very helpful.)
3. 1996 Aims Education Foundation Primarily Earth
4.Ketchikan Visitors Bureau Video
